The gaming lounge at Tidal Veranda — The Rangataua Room — is reserved for adults aged 20 and over, in line with New Zealand law. The rest of the hotel welcomes guests of every age.

Eighty-six of them across seven floors. Forty-one face the ocean, thirty-eight face the harbour, and seven — the corner suites and the penthouse — do both.
Nobody comes to Mount Maunganui to sit in a hotel room. The rooms here are made for the hour before you go out and the hour after you come back: somewhere to hang a wet towel that will actually dry, a shower with real pressure, blackout curtains that work at five in the morning in January, and a bed you will not have to think about.
Every room was refitted between 2021 and 2023 — new beds throughout, new bathrooms in fifty-eight of them, and double glazing on the Marine Parade side that takes the surf down to a rumour. Floors are oak. Bathrooms are tiled in a pale local ceramic that shows sand and forgives it.
There are no connecting rooms in the building; the 2012 rebuild did not allow for them. Families usually take a Mauao Executive, which has a sitting room with a sofa bed, or two Harbour Classics side by side on level three.
Rates shown are the lowest of the year — mid-week, outside December to February and outside school holidays. All include GST. Breakfast at Moturiki is NZ$34 per person unless your rate says otherwise.
Twenty-eight rooms · levels one to three · harbour side
The room most guests book, and then book again. It faces west across Pilot Bay, which means afternoon light and, twice a day, a view of sandflats where an hour ago there was water. Queen bed, a proper chair, a shower rather than a bath.
Twenty-four rooms · levels two to five · Main Beach side
Facing east over Marine Parade to the sand. You hear the surf; that is either the reason you booked or the reason you should book the other side. Configurable as a king or two singles, which makes it the room we give to friends travelling together.
Eighteen rooms · levels three to six · ocean or harbour
The room the hotel is named after. A 9 m² veranda with two chairs and a table at the right height for breakfast, sheltered on the northern side so it stays usable when the easterly comes through. Nine face the ocean, nine the harbour; the harbour ones get the sunsets.
Ten rooms · levels four to six · north-facing
A separate sitting room with a sofa bed, a desk that is a desk rather than a gesture, and the maunga filling the north window. The room business travellers ask for by name and families quietly book for the extra bed.
Five suites · levels five and six · corner, two aspects
Corner suites with glass on two walls: ocean out of one, harbour and the pine line of Matakana Island out of the other. Twenty-four kilometres of trees that were planted, not found. A separate bedroom, a dining table for four, and a bath positioned where somebody clearly thought about it.
One · level seven · veranda on three sides
The whole of the seventh floor: two bedrooms, a kitchen that works, a dining table for eight, and 41 m² of veranda wrapping three sides of the building, so there is always one side out of the wind. Booked about a year ahead for New Year and most of January. Two nights minimum, three over public holidays.
Wi-Fi, and enough of it to work on. Filtered water. A drying rail on the balcony or in the bathroom, because you will come back wet. Beach towels, which are a different colour from the bathroom towels so that housekeeping can tell and so can you.
Also: the lap pool and sauna, the beach chairs stacked by the eastern door, the van to the airport, tea and coffee in the lobby at any hour, and a boot-wash outside the car park lift for whatever you dragged in.
A bath with a view is not standard — it is in eleven of the rooms
Booking through this site or by telephone gets you the same rate as anywhere else, plus a free upgrade if the category above is empty at 3pm on the day. We are not able to promise the upgrade in January.
